Onshore Power Supply - Cold Ironing

Ingeteam offers its clients comprehensive solutions for connection to the electricity grid for ships moored in port. It includes consultancy for the in-depth analysis of the optimal solution, detailed engineering, specification, supply and commissioning, both of the fundamental elements, as well as the auxiliary elements.

These are the systems known as OPS (Onshore Power Supply) or Cold Ironing, in naval terminology.

• It encompasses modular solutions, ranging from 1 MVA to 44 MVA - higher on demand - and connections in both low and medium voltage, which allows covering vessels of any size and different arrangements of each module.
• OPS solutions are available both for fixed locations, in a conventional electrical room (civil works), as well as in a transportable version, in ISO container or in prefabricated construction.
• Optionally, it can incorporate a SCADA system that allows the customer to monitor and control their installation.
• The solution allows communication with other equipment or SCADAs using different communication protocols (i.e. IEC61850, 101, 104, PROCOME ...).
• Ships prefabricated and pre-tested for quick installation.
• It is a scalable system. It can be expanded by adding modules that provide simultaneous power supply to ships as port needs grow.

The OPS replaces the electricity generated by diesel engines with the electricity provided by the port, ideally from clean energy.

The OPS System acquires electrical energy directly from the port network, transforms it to medium voltage and changes the frequency to that of the ship (50 or 60Hz). Once the electricity reaches the connection point, an overhead cable system injects this electricity into the ship, which transforms it to low voltage and powers all the ship's systems. Once the electricity from the port reaches the ship, the ship is able to turn off its diesel generators, saving on fuel, eliminating toxic emissions, increasing the comfort of the occupants, etc.

• Significant reduction of greenhouse effect atmospheric emissions: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).
• Improvement of air quality in ports and port cities.
• Savings in fuel, by using electricity during docking.
• Reduction of noise and vibrations in the ship. By making it possible to stop the ship's conventional engines, this solution enables compliance with port noise codes, as well as increasing passenger comfort.
• Savings in operating costs and maintenance of the engines, as they are only in operation during the journeys and not when stopped. This also favours an increase in the useful life of the engines.
• Access to discounts on port charges when docking, as more and more ports promote the use of electricity grid in their facilities.
