Desalination

Fresh water is a limited resource suffering from record demand. Estimates indicate that water production through desalination processes will double in the next 15 years. As the human population grows, social needs, industries and agriculture become more demanding in terms of water consumption and pressure increases on freshwater sources, which are not sufficient to meet all demands.

Non-conventional sources of fresh water, such as desalination, are used in areas where several factors come together, such as scarcity of rainfall and demographic pressure, which places a very high demand on the resource, jeopardizing the guarantee of supply and therefore the economic development of the communities.

If an area has a shortage of water, desalination can be more economical than transporting water from far away. As a result, it is increasingly being used to produce water suitable for human consumption or irrigation. In fact, more than 300 million people now rely on desalination plants for municipal, industrial and agricultural purposes.
