Driving the Mexican energy market: Miguel Lara, Sales Director of PGA Mexico

In January 2017, Miguel Lara was appointed Ingeteam Sales Director for the Power Grid Automation business unit in Mexico. During his visit to Grupo Ingeteam’s head office in Bilbao, we had a conversation in which he shared his views of the future, his management plan and his perspectives on the electrical substation automation, control and protection business in Mexico. Here is an extract of the conversation:

  • What experience do you have in the grid automation sector?

I am an executive with over 10 years’ international experience in managing sales and marketing areas in multinational companies, having developed my activity in business areas related to substation protection, control, telecommunications, automation and digitalisation. The opportunity to have participated in all of the stages of a project has enabled me to have a deep insight into its needs coupled with client-focused results. I also have an MBA with an important multicultural element, which has enabled me to develop new skills in opening new emerging markets and new channels in Latin America.

  • Which projects are we currently working on in Mexico?

In context, I think it is important to explain that Ingeteam Power Grid Automation (PGA), together with its subsidiary in Mexico is the business area in the group dedicated to product design, manufacturing and supply and control, protection and measurement solutions for electrical substation automation for clients in the transmission, distribution, generation and electrical power consumption sectors.

Furthermore, Ingeteam in Mexico is supplying turnkey projects, providing a complete control and protection solution for a substation in different voltage levels, based in world class technology and high expertise that allows Ingeteam to have covered over 2GW of non-conventional renewable energy supplied for the main customers including CFE (Comision federal de Electricidad).

  • How do you see the future of the sector in Mexico and as Sales Director of the PGA unit in Mexico? What is the growth forecast for Ingeteam in the substation automation sector?

In Mexico, a country which produces a significant amount of natural gas and oil and which has substantial hydrocarbon reserves, the production of goods and services is based on the consumption of fossil fuels. However, considering the concern justified by the environment and the availability of renewable energies, I personally consider that it is essential to develop a new energy model of efficient usage that promotes sustainability in highly-robust grids as well as emphasising the use of alternative energies. Bearing this in mind, I am able to confirm that the recent energy reform in the country has made it possible to open up opportunities in solar and wind projects. So in order to adapt to this new reality, Ingeteam Mexico offers solutions with protection, control and measurement systems as well as automation systems for high-performance electrical substations, able to comply with the highest standards on the market and complying with the most demanding certifications in the sector. One example is the LAPEM trustworthy supplier certificate required by the CFE (Comisión Federal de Electricidad).
  • Which Ingeteam values are most helpful when dealing with our clients?

We have a solid structure of human resources in Mexico, consisting of just over 500 employees, distributed throughout 4 main offices: Monterrey, Juchitán, San Luis Potosí and Mexico City. This makes it possible to provide rapid attention according to a client’s needs. Our human resources structure covers engineering personnel, technical support, projects, factory, purchasing, sales, finance amongst others. So when presenting our company to a client, I always rely on Ingeteam's local network in Mexico and of course in Spain, Brazil and Thailand, these being the countries where are solutions and products are most widely deployed. These serve as the operational basis for gradually reaching more countries in the area of influence, thanks to a local structure and collaboration agreements that have been forged over the years, following the requirements of our clients wherever they are.
A fundamental cornerstone for me is Ingeteam´s history, with over 40 years in the energy sector making it a leading, reputable supplier of medium, high and extra-high voltage substation automation and control solutions.
In terms of electrical energy distribution and transmission, I am always supported by over 50 electrical companies spanning over 40 countries worldwide.
I cannot fail to mention the active role played by Ingeteam in designing solutions for integrating renewable energies, collaborating with major clients worldwide. And of course, there is “i+c” - innovation and commitment to our clients - which are fundamental values in Grupo Ingeteam.

On behalf of Ingeteam, I would like to wish you every success as Sales Director of PGA in Mexico!
